General info
New Jersey is called the "Garden State" which reflects readily the importance of the horticultural industry in the state. New Jersey is situated in the center of the belt of heavy population and industry between Washington D.C. and Boston, Mass. The total value of agriculture in the state is about $ 400 million, with fruits and vegetables combined amounting to about $ 175 million. Vegetables, both for fresh market and processing outlets, are about $ 70 million and $ 30 million, respectively. Fruits amount to about $ 40 million and flowers and ornamentals about $ 50 million.
Institutions:
Rutgers: the State University, was founded as Queens College in 1766 by members of the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1825 the name of the College was changed to Rutgers in honour of Col. Henry Rutgers, a former trustee. In 1864, Rutgers' Scientific School was designated as the "land grant college" of New Jersey, becoming the College of Agriculture and later Cook College, at New Brunswick. In 1945 the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station became a part of the University. The university has campuses at Newark and Camden and offers courses in engineering, science, liberal arts, medicine, law and agriculture. Total enrollment is about 30,000 students. Horticultural research is centered at New Brunswick in the Department of Horticulture and Forestry. which has responsibility for research, teaching and extension in floriculture, forestry, landscape design, ornamentals, pomology and vegetable crops. Research is both basic and applied, primarily serving the industry of the state. Two important research areas are breeding and nutrition including trace elements. Many vegetable and fruit varieties introduced from this station are internationally grown.
