General info
Nebraska is the most westerly of the North Central group of states. Its total area is 77,227 m2 of which only 615 are water covered. Nebraska has become the largest irrigated region closest to the metropolitan East. Extensive areas of productive soils and a climate similar to major producing areas suggest a potential for increased horticultural crops production in the State. Vegetable yield results in the state and economic analyses of vegetable and principal agronomic crop production indicate that, under a high level of management, vegetable production in irrigated land can be competitive with other uses of resources. The climate is distinctly continental and is characterized by a wide temperature difference between winter and summer. Temperatures in January and July respectively, average -5 and 24ºC. Horticulture research centers in the Department of Horticulture at the university of Nebraska in Lincoln. The horticultural research activities of the Department may be summarized as follows: 1 - Routine but necessary variety testing to evaluate the many new introductions under local conditions. National turfgrass and flowering crab trials are included. 2 - Agricultural climatology, plant physiology, plant breeding and genetics, biochemistry and post harvest physiology, and the propagation and production of turfgrass, vegetables and ornamental plant materials are involved in the present day research projects and programs of the Department.
