General info
Georgia is the largest state in land area cast of the Mississippi River, thus it has a diverse climate and topography. Temperature means vary, but in general, the climate is cool (-17.7 ºC to 7.2 ºC) during the winter, mild in spring and fall (23.9 ºC), and hot (27 to 35 ºC) during the summer. Adequate rainfall (1100 to 1400 mm) is received throughout the year, but due to poor rainfall distribution, irrigation is a necessity. The northern part of the state consists of an extension of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has an elevation of approximately 642 meters. This area is the center of apple production (value of $5 million) and also grows vegetables ($2 million), small fruit ($100,000), and ornamental transplants ($10 million), The mid portion of Georgia, an area of rolling hills, extending from north of Atlanta to Macon in central Georgia, contains the greatest population density (over 1/2 of the total population of the state) and is a heavy user and producer of ornamentals ($250 million). Southern Georgia, consisting of flat open land, produces peaches ($25 million), vegetables ($250 million), and ornamentals ($250 million). Several vegetable crops are produced, mainly in southwestern ($200 million) and eastern Georgia (Vidalia onions; $30 million) while peaches are produced in mid and extreme southern portions of the state. Pecans ($200 million) and ornamentals are produced throughout southern Georgia. Organisations / Institutes:
