Climate
The climate varies according to the region. From rainy tropical in the northeast, to continental in the eastern and central parts to Mediterranean in the western and southern coasts. Thus, annual precipitation ranges between 150-2500 mm.

Geography
Turkey is montainous in the east and has high mountains parallel to the sea line in the northern and southern coast. In the west, mountains run perpendicular to the sea creating fertile valleys in between. Higher plains are found in the central and eastern part of the country.

Horticulture
Turkey is the gene centre of many horticultural species. Dominating crops are olives, grapes, apple, citrus, stone fruits and nuts; tomato, melons,cucumber, cabbage, beans, leek; cut and pot flowers. A wide range of hort. crops can be commercially grown.

The main regions for olives, citrus, greenhouse(vegetables and ornamentals) and open field vegetables are the Mediterranean and Aegean regions. Marmara region is known for processing vegetables, Southeast Turkey for pistachio and Northeast Turkey for hazelnut and tea.

The main research thrust is the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council.

Nature of Institutes
Most of the institutes are state institutes, either within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs or universities. There are a few belonging to farmer cooperatives, TARIS, FISKOBIRLIK or are private ones (mainly releted to seed business).
