Togo
Climate
Togo, on the Africa continent, is situated between 0° and 2° longitude East and between 6° and 12° latitude North. Due to this location we have a diversity of climates. These can be grouped into a tropical climate with one dry season and one rainy season (between the eighth and twelfth degree north), and a Mediterranean climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons (all unstable).
The yearly average for precipitation ranges from 900-1400 mm. The yearly average number of days with rain ranges from 80-120. The yearly average temperature ranges from 22.5-33.0 °C. The yearly average relative humidity ranges from 60-80%.
Geography
Togo has various relief: In the south and East we have flat land but in the North and West we have mountains. The lands closed to the beach are sandy but generally in the South the soil are clay . In the North and Centre the soils are from clay-loam to loam.
Horticulture
Any aspects of horticulture are found in Togo: arboriculture , private flower culture and vegetable production in the open.
Distribution of Horticulture
Fruit production is concentrated in the West and Central regions; vegetable production in the open is found in all region especially in the sea region , Kara region and savanna region. Private flower culture is essentially in Sea region.
Research Thrusts
The main research trust is ITRA (Institut Togolais de Recherche Agronomique) under the Ministry of Agriculture. Besides there is the Department of Agriculture of the University of Benin.
