Organisational Structure
Work on plant diseases and fruit research has been going on at Mt Albert since 1936 when the first 6.6 ha of land were acquired and buildings and facilities began to be developed. Now more than 200 staff work at the site and the latest development, the Padfield building - a world-class post-harvest facility - opened in 1997. Highlights from the centre include working with industry to gain access to the Japanese market for apples, cherries and other summerfruit; underpinning research on kiwifruit storage and maturity; controlled atmosphere storage conditions for pipfruit and DNA marker technology for distinguishing mealybug species, securing access to the US market for apples. Mt Albert is also the main centre in New Zealand for research on insect diseases. Other disciplines working here include insect/disease control; chemistry/biochemistry; plant breeding and genetics and environment and risk management. The site is also home to specialist features such as electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, a flow cytometer and insect rearing facilities.
