Organisational Structure
Work at Palmerston North Research Centre covers many aspects of horticultural research from subcellular/molecular level to the whole plant - including the effects of the environment. Fruit, flowers, shelter trees, insects and bacteria are of interest to our scientists. The Laboratory is one of a number of specialist facilities based in Palmerston North. Unique to New Zealand, it consists of 24 walk-in rooms in which temperature, carbon dioxide, day length, light intensity and spectrum and plant nutrition can all be precisely regulated. It is used by HortResearch, other CRIs, universities, overseas scientists and commercial companies. HortResearch also operates the only electron microscopy facility in the central North Island, and the Technology Development Group recently installed a new benchtop gas chromatograph mass spectrometer capable of measuring and identifying aroma and flavour compounds in foods down to concentrations of parts per trillion. The Institute's Corporate Office is at Palmerston North and the CEO, Dr Ian Warrington, is based here. It is the centre of HortResearch's Marketing operations, offering a range of services to help staff identify and take advantage of business opportunities, promote their science and carry out effective technology transfer.
