Organisational Structure
Plant protection, looking for environmentally safe ways to control insect pests, bioremediation of soil pollutants and producing perfect black currants are some of the fascinating and diverse projects underway at Canterbury Research Centre. Links with nearby Lincoln University are strong and collaborative work is being carried out to improve Integrated Fruit Production systems techniques for pest, disease, soil and understory management, so that crops can be grown using minimal amounts of chemicals. Treatments include growing other plants in orchards to attract beneficial insects, and using pheromones to control pests. This work is benefitting the pipfruit industry, but has implications for other sectors including forestry, vegetables and kiwifruit.About 40 staff Institute-wide are working on the Biological Orchard Production Systems project putting together an interdisciplinary production system. Lincoln has its own set of objectives for the project, including finding the susceptibility or resistance of some nitrogen-fixing herbs to lightbrown apple moth, and also determining the environmental impact of biological production compared to other systems.
