Climate
Germany has a temperate maritime climate. The general air stream is from west to east. The precipitation on average is 700 mm with minima in the sheltered basins (500 mm) and maxima in the mountain areas (>1000 mm). Precipitation is highest in the summer.

Geography
Germany cuts across three of Europe´s major east-west trending regions: The alps in the south, Central Uplands in the center part, and in the north are the Central Lowlands.

Horticulture
All temperate horticultural crops are grown, and some protected cultivation is found close to metropolitan areas.
The warm lowlands of the southwest favor the growing of crops like tobacco and vegetables; the latter also grow in the Elbe marshes below Hamburg and the Spreewald south of Berlin. Fruit grows on hillsides in southern Germany, in the "Altes Land" on the Elbe below Hamburg, The Havel lake country near Potsdam, and the Halle area. Viniculture is found mainly along the Rhine, Moselle, and other rivers of southern Germany, and on the Elbe near Dresden.

Research Thrusts
The main ways of research funding are: Government, Federal State, Research Grants, and combinations of the two.

Nature of Institutes
In Germany research can be divided into three levels: applied (development and extension services), aiming at application (research, development, and teaching), and basic (research and teaching).
Research is directed towards improving yield and quality of produce, towards reduction in input of labor, towards optimization of input of pesticides and fertilizers, and towards reducing their impact on the environment.
