General info
Horticulture in the Czech Republic has a long tradition.

Climate
The Czech Republic belongs to the mild climatic region. January is the coldest month (on average -0.2 °C), July the warmest one (on average 9.5 °C). The total radiant energy per year varies from 3670 MJ.m-2 in the north to 4600 MJ.m-2 in the southeast. The driest area, around Zatec, has an average annual rainfall of 410 mm, whereas near Jizerske hory in the mountain region the average annual rainfall amounts to 1705 mm. The yearly average number of days with snow is less than 40 in the low-land regions and up to 120 days in the mountains.

Geography
The Czech Republic was established in 1993 after splitting from the Slovak Republic. The total area is 78864 km2. The elevation varies from 98 meters in the low-land region to 1609 meters in the mountain area in the north.

Horticulture
The Czech Republic has a long tradition in horticulture. At present the production is about 600,000 tons of vegetable, 400,000 tons of fruits and 80,000 tons of grapes. The most important vegetable species are cabbage, carrot and onion. Also tomato and pickling cucumber are very popular. Total vegetable area is up to 45,000 ha. Fruit production is mostly focused on apple growing (more then 200,000 tons), total orchard area is up to 20,000 ha.

Distribution of Horticulture
Horticulture is practised mainly in the southern low-land regions.

Research Thrusts
Horticultural sciences and research are directed by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Czech Academy of Sciences and the universities.

Nature of Institutes
The Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry is situated at Brno. The Faculty of Horticulture of this university is in Lednice na Morave. The Czech Society for Horticultural Science and the Horticultural Department of the Czech Agricultural Academy of Science have their seat at the Faculty of Horticulture of the Mendel University. Lednice is a unique culture landscape area protected by UNESCO.

Ten Higher Horticultural Schools exist in the country. They have a 4 and 5 years course, which pass every year about 250 students.
